Rudge Guitars was born out of an idea - how to combine quality hardwoods, cabinet making skills and a love for guitars.
All my life, I've worked with wood; first as a furniture maker and restorer and finally as the Head of a department teaching Fine Joinery. After I stopped teaching I was left with a quantity of good, seasoned wood from my furniture making days, some of it over 40 years old that was crying out to be used. I wanted to do something other than make it into furniture.
I decided to make a guitar using some of the timber I already had (namely English Yew and cherry), I also had a quantity of other hardwoods, including Honduras Mahogany, Rosewood, English and American Walnut and a small quantity of Rosewood and satinwood for the fretboard and inlays.
Although well aware of the properties of these fine woods for furniture making I was initially unsure of the result when combining them into a guitar. Turns out, the results are pretty amazing.
